These families are considered “invisible” to our society, and most survive on an income of less than 50 reais a month, in shacks made with leftover posters, surrounded by rats, insects and scorpions, and feeding on leftover food that they get there. Unfortunately, we have even witnessed people and children eating roasted rats, as it was the “only meat they had to feed the children” according to a grandmother of 9 grandchildren, who has lived in the area for 37 years.
